According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land.
Smith Center was considered the geographic center of the United States until the admission of Alaska and Hawaii into the union. Following the admission of those states, the geographic center fell in North Dakota.
If you look at an old town directory, if they had them, you'll find this to be the birth place, I believe, of Grandmother Whelchel. The name you seek is Johns.

I've been looking at our old Homestead pictures in Smith Center, KS (really 11miles north of Smith Center). The Johns children Lilly, Elsie and Richard were born there about 1 mile away from the original homestead of Great Great Grandma and Grandpa Nichols, parents of 11 large and frowning children, of which one is Minnie Nichols who married Mr. Johns and settled one mile away(not really in Smith Center at all)but that's the closest uh..town.
This picture is amazing! We all need real copies of it. It was found within Maxine's collections.
