Headed to Laughlin to run a half

Lauren and myself and her friend Brittney are headed to Laughlin today. I am running their half marathon tomorrow. I ran a 10k last week and did a personal best by almost 3 minutes so I had high expectations for this week. However, I've picked up a bug. YUCK. I have swollen glands, lots of congestion and a low grade fever. They give you 3 1/2 hours to finish tomorrow, so I will treat it like a long slow training run and finish, collect the finishers medal and call it good. Guess the next personal best will have to wait for Salt Lake.

The blog sure is quiet!! Where is everyone? Steph....can you tell us about your surgery? Did you notice the mark or did your doctor? Caitlin and Jonathan have both had some really bad sunburns and I worry a lot about them. Any tips or suggestions for what to watch for?

Hope it went well Tracy! Was Lauren running too or was she the cheering section?

My surgery went well. When I was in elementary school I had friends with a pool and I used to get sunburned all the time. Now I am 24 and have had skin cancer removed. My doctor kept lecturing me telling me I was too young for this. They had to go back and cut 5 times which is pretty rare I think. Yesterday I got the stitches out and hopefully things will heal well so I won't have too bad of a scar. My advice is look over your body and take notice of whats there, if you have irregular red spots go have them checked. It is much better to have things taken care of before it spreads a lot.

Red spots? I thought you had to worry about dark or multi colored spots? I am clueless. I am not worried about myself but about Jon and Cait. They have had some bad burns in their childhood. Where was yours if you don't mind my asking?

Carleton's two (so far) skin cancers have been on his shoulder and on his neck. He has never been a "sun worshipper" but in the course of life, unless we are wearing hats and/or sunscreen, we get lots and lots of sun exposure. If you are concerned about them, take them to a dermatologist. Dad's first cancer was a red mark on his shoulder. This latest one was an irregularly shaped brown spot on his neck. He has lots of "stuff" on him so it was fortunate that one was pointed our and biopsied as it turned out to be Melanoma. We'll know in a few days if it was all removed.
